The automatic timer on the light
shuts off
alone in the darkness, afraid
afraid, not of light
afraid, not of the dark
afraid to move
afraid my movement would
in essence, activate the motion sensor

the moment the light goes off
you hear, new sounds arrive

the moment the light goes off
you see, new visions, acuity

the moment the light goes off
you feel, in that — moment

unafraid.

the phone rings
there’s knocks at your door
the baby cries
the dog barks
the car horn blares
the neighbors yell
the teenagers texting
continuous

I bought a light switch
the one with a toggle
the one that I control
up is on
down is off

I installed it —
myself
